2003 GT 4.10 Gears Advice
#21
You could do it yourself if you had detailed instructions or a buddy with knowledge of how to do it.
You are probably pretty well covered on tools except for a Dial Indicator for measuring backlash.
Just my feeling on the bearings... I think it is foolish not to install new bearings and seals while the differential is apart. If you do these items now, you should have many years of trouble free operation. It would suck to have the diff apart now and have a seal leak in 6 months or a bearing start going. The diff would have to come apart again. The cost of the parts isn't that high. I say replace these parts now and then you'll have no worries in the future.
Good luck, and enjoy the gears!!!

Is the pinion bearing pressed on and will I need a press machine to get the new one on? I should just start my own thread.
Thanks bro...

I went with 373's, once I got S/C'ed, I think they are the best gears for the 1/4 mile because I redline in 4th at about 122-125 mph. With stock sized tires, you have to shift into 5th with a Supercharger in the quarter with 410's. That's bogus man!!!! Lol!

So I just called my auto shop that I use to do any major work on my car. They quoted me $500 dollars for the install and possibly a new pinion bearing. That doesn't even include parts beside the bearing. I personally think this sounds a little high because apparently install takes 5 hours. Not completely sold on this. Does it sound reasonable??

This debate between 4.10 and 3.73 is killing me :P I can't for the life of me figure out which one to do haha... Anyone have any simple advice for picking between them...?

I have some advice: If you are gonna drag race it more than have some fun on the street, get 3.73's. If you want to go on the street and have the kick in the pants fun more than drag racing, get 4.10's. Or split the difference with 3.90's. Either way do something!! Its way worth it!

Only you can pick the correct gears for your needs.
4.10s will give you the most torque multiplication and subsequently the best acceleration. You wouldn't regret 4.10s unless you plan to run with more than ~335rwhp. Beyond that, you have to consider your trap speed in the 1/4 and if you will be turning too many rpm at that speed and need to shift into overdrive ratio. That is the only reason that I swapped out my 4.10s for 3.90s.
As mentioned above, if you are really torn between 3.73 and 4.10, just get 3.90s and be done with it. DO NOT wait any longer to get gears! You will hate yourself later if you do.
GOOD LUCK!!!

or if you produce more power than stated and are "running out of gear" in the 1/4 with 4.10s, just buy taller tires for the track. 29" tall tires can last you a long way with 4.10s. ultimately, you have to decide what you're going to do with, and expect out of, your stang; unfortunately, we can't decide for you

I doubt you will regret the 4.10 gear, but 3.90 may be a nice option since you are so torn between 3.73 and 4.10.
