Default New 4.10's! Gear noise...

Ok...So today I had 4.10's installed! Yay!! Love the way it makes my car feel. My issue though, is gear noise. When I decelerate it whines pretty good, and i can feel it in the shifter as well. Its especially bad in lower gears as I decelerate. I had all the bearings replaced, the LS has new cobra carbon fiber clutch discs and I used moblie 75w140 synthetic gear oil with friction modifier.

So....only about 45 miles put on the new gears (thats how far I had to go to get them done for a decent price). Will the gears break in and the noise mitigate? Or should I take it back? I also replaced the diff cover with a ford racing one.

I had a guy thats a tech at midwest auto do it on the side, he builds racecars and all that. I talked to him and he said he would certainly look at it. Thinks maybe its a pinion adjustment. He said he didnt drive it too much when he was done, he put maybe 3 miles on it and let it warm up on the rack first. I didnt really notice it until i was a few miles out. When I was doing around 60, when I let off i could hear a kind of whistle. But when I slowed down to a stop upshifting is when I noticed it whirring, and could feel it in the shifter, and my shifter is still stock. So its definitley transmitting some vibrations.

He probably knows what to look for, but the backlash needs to be checked and I would make sure the pinion is properly torqued. It can be tough to get the pinion torqued down.

Yea, He seems like he knows his sh$%, he will be coming over later this week so we can take it for a spin, that way I dont have to drive it all the way to his shop unti we know a little better and if he has to order parts. Whats the pinion torque supposed to be?

I can't tell you the torque off the top of my head, but I bet CLIFFY can tell you.

From what it looks like there is no particular torque. You have to remove the carrier assembly and with a new crush sleeve tighten it down until the sleeve starts to crush, then take measurements of the torque it takes to turn the pinion gear. Should be somewhere around 10-12 ftlbs. Once that is done then you can install the carrier assembly and go from there. Man I hope this gets starighten out the right way soon...so disappointed right now. If I had the room to do it myself I would have.
