Ok i figured that. That makes more sense now. I just didnt understand how i was able to have another gear with the original gears
Your confusion is what happens when jargon is substituted for proper terminology. In automotive circles the word "gears", when used without specific context, is almost always is meant to refer to the final drive gears.
But when used in a discussion of a transmission's characteristics "gears" refers to the number of selectable forward gear ratios a transmission has; "4-speed", "5-speed", "6-speed", etc. With automotive transmissions the existence of the reverse gear is assumed.
Those of us old enough can remember when 3-speed transmissions with steering column mounted shifters ("three-on-the-tree") were the norm, and having a 4-speed with a floor mounted shifter ("4 on the floor") was a big deal...
