Default swapping gauge cluster - PATS security issue? auto vs manual cluster?

I am looking at swapping my guage cluster for another unit. Is there a PATS security issue that will prevent me from doing so? I have read that the ECU and the cluster share a security code and only programmed units can work together - is this true? Therefore I cannot simply swap a cluster into my 00 GT?

Also is there any easy quick way of telling a manual cluster vs automatic? The seller of the cluster is unsure whether or not the one they have for sale is from an auto. my car is a manual.

I am doing this because I have been experiencing some irratic speedo movement. I suspect it is either the cluster or a connection issue with a speedo-recal installed by the previous owner after he swapped for 3:73s.

Thanks
