Default 4.6 Starter duty Cycle?

Just wondering, im spinning my motor while testing the VR sensor, just wanted to know if there is some sort of duty cycle on the starter solenoid that keeps it from turning? or is my wiring just bad (it is temporary, as im just in a testing phase right now)

I'm spinning the motor without compression (spark plugs removed) just to see what kind of readings i'm getting off the VR, just to ensure i dont have too much noise, and also to check firing order.

now, i've got the solenoid wired up directly via a switch, and it seems like every 2nd or 3rd, sometimes 4th attempt to spin the motor, i get nothing, not even a "click" then i'll go do something else for about 10 minutes, come back and do it again. and i never really spin the motor for more than 5 seconds at a time. there shouldnt be any load due to the spark plugs being removed (with them in, i get a bit of oscillation on my tooth count due to the variation in speed b/c of compression instead of a nice steady flat 35 teeth and one tooth double in length)

I am not aware of any specific thermal or other protection internal to the starter or solenoid.

However it is not inconceivable to me that the solenoid coil could heat, and by that the coil's magnetic field when energised degrade to the point that it could no longer pull in the solenoid; until it had cooled. It was after all designed for intermittent use.

Just a thought...

alright, it might just be the wiring, i know the starter side of the lugs are pretty ****ty last time i was under there. infact it was so bad at one point that i had to jiggle the solenoid +12v wire when it was wet out before i could start it. I tightened both lugs last time i was under there, but i never replaced em due to time constraints. soon as i get under there again i'll prolly swap the starter and the lugs. maybe run a new set of wire.

im figuring its either that or one of my grounds maybe, though i just ran "new" grounds using two 4 gauge wal-mart specials, went from chassis direct to neg post, and engine block direct to neg post. also verified my block to chassis ground was still in place. might add a few more if necessary, but im not going to be needing a bunch of power other than coils, injectors, pump, and a few lights. infact the highest draw will probably just be the starter.
