Default Need advice on missed shift

While driving to the golf course Sunday I decided to show off a bit for a friend and floored it on the onramp. To my surprise the engine just continued to rev past the normal shift point of 6200 rpm. It made it to 7200 before I noticed (the engine made an angry noise at me) and quickly let off the gas. The car has never done this before. Any ideas on what could have happened here or if there are any possible transmission problems? It definately put a scare in me with the sound it made and the fact that this has just never happened before, and I have launched this car numerous times.

To note, I have a 2000 GT Auto with approx 62k miles. It was in an accident about 2 months ago, but that was only minor damage to passenger rear and the front bumper was torn off as I went over a curb.

A co-worker suggested putting in a shift kit. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
