Welcome to the forums! There are a lot of threads on this, and even a whole section dedicated to it in the mustang tech section. Most of us prefer a synthetic oil, 5w20 or 30 (30 is beter, the 20 is just to eek out that extra bit of gas mileage for EPA tests) MAny like Royal Purple, Amsoil, Castrol and Mobil 1. Its really up to you. Now get that oil changed and pop some pics of that car up here for us to see what a free Mustang looks like!

as long as you change your oil every 3000-5000 miles and maintain everything properly, you'll be fine. for what its worth, i use 10w 40 or 15w 40. i've had good luck with it and i really use my vehicles and beat on them.

This is a great question - very timely for me too.
Ford published a TSB in Jan 2002 (TSB 02-1-9) recommending 5W-20 for 94-02 3.8L, 96-02 4.6L SOHC, 96-02 4.6L DOHC Mustangs any many other F/L/M engines. Has another TSB been published with a different recommendation? I have a new 4.6 DOHC engine going together now and want to be sure I start off on the right track.
I live in the Midwest. Honestly, if it is below zero outside both the Cobra and I are staying inside. The car is more likely to be out in the heat (about 104 outside today).
TSB’s aside, is oil selection more of a preference thing like go with what you know?

My engine likes 5w30 or 10w30 far better then any Xw20 oil. It runs a lot quieter and smoother. I normally run Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker state Ultimate Durability. Valvoline and Mobil 1 are also good choices. Use a quality filter too. Motorcraft, Wix, Purolator, K&N all fit the bill. Stay away from Fram.
