Looking into Gears (3.55 or 3.73 ) ?
I was discussing gears options with a friend of mine that is very technically inclined to say the least about him, and has done many engine rebuilds and what not from the ground up.
And I said I wouldnt mind upgrading my gears, since I think the rearend bearing is kinda noisy and might need replaced and he said may aswell get a gear kit and do it all at once. And he asked what ratio would you go with knowing I drive 100miles a day and my 2004 GT ( AODE) is my Daily Driver so dont want to eat up in gas from doing this change anymore than normal but a little pep in my step wouldnt hurt any.
And I was like well 3.73 would make the most sense I think, 4.10 is gonna be way to steep with that high of a tooth and would kill me in gas! And he was like yup, your exactly right there... and he mentioned about a 3.55 and I was like really???
Sooooo didnt know what peoples thoughts on this would be, dont hear many people throw that number around much.
just thought I would get some insight...

Holy crap, a gear thread!
Serious note: First off this is in the 2005-2013 section, but I understand its a 4.6 so you just jumped straight into the tech section.
Go find a gear calculator online, and figure out what works best. Using your transmission ratios, and tire size, you can input the rear gear ratios to get a graph of mph vs rpm for each gear.
If you go with the 3.55's and they are too tall, go with a smaller tire.

Truth is people blow the mileage difference way out of proportion when comparing 3.73s and 4.10s. It's really pretty negligible. Plus, mileage is a terrible reason to choose a gear ratio. You should consider what you plan on doing with the car and what gears will be most effective for that application.

Well thanks for the replies everyone, nice to see a forum still having activity...
Yeah I had done a search on Gear threads before posting and saw this was a 4.6 section and figured why not, not thinking this being a s197 area... who da thunk'd it!
Last time I heard someone actually running a 3.55 was in a 98 Cobra a few yrs back but not new edge cars, would it be worth any gain to go with a 3.55?
90% of my driving is all done on the highway more than city so gas mileage is a little important thats for sure. And for me to change wheel diameter is a little out of the question since I just dropped close to $400 on new rear 315/35/17 since mine were needing replaced badly and then I have 255/40's up front.
Its a AODE Transmission so I have that against me I know already, and with it having 155k on the ODO but smooth sailing so far.
Does anybody have a link for the calculator mentioned above? I'm thinking 3.73 might be the best route here...
