Default Fuel Leak

Well, today was the first day I really had a chance to dicker with my new Mustang. I detailed it, made a list of little things I needed and then trucked to the auto parts store to get some clay. I gassed her up and noticed that she was leaking fuel near the inside of the right rear wheel. I thought I had just overfilled it.

Nope.

I got to the auto parts store and gas was still coming out...in a stream. I called the dealer and they were cool. I took her over there and dropped her off. I saw this once before with a 92 Crown Vic. Are Mustangs prone to leaking around the top of the tank or around the filler neck? The leak tapered off after about 15 minutes, and my fuel gauge didn't drop too much. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I don't think the dealer will be stupid and say I over-filled it and not to worry about it, but I just want to be prepared in case they do.

Thanks in advance!

There is a overfill tube. Atleast there was on my v6, that when you overfill or slosh gas, that will leak all over the road. Maybe the evap is hammed and isn't shutting the pump off. Or it's acting like a siphon tube

Okay, wondering if I'm a douche and overfilled the fking thing. Still, the gas pump shut down without being topped off, that's what worried me. That, and the fact that the entire back of the car smelled like gas - inside and out. Would it leak for as long as it did if I had just overfilled it?

I think you're right. I went over and got the car and took her for a spin. A few hard left turns had her smelling like gas. I pulled over and saw the tank was wet again and there were some small drops on the ground. Is this a common problem, or is this something to do with age?

The filler neck has rusted through, remove the corrugated plastic condom and you will see the damaged area--watch this video to see where it happens...

happened on mine as well. replace the gromet. two straps hold up the tank, slowly and progressively lower it after moving the fill tank bolts behind the gas cap. replace gromet. reverse. just be careful lowering the tank.
