Default Clutch noise

I have a stock 97' GT with stock clutch. My clutch has a little play in it before it engages. While the car is in gear the clutch rattles. When I step on it, slightly, the noise goes away. I've been told that pulling up on the clutch will adjust it. I've done this and then I have no clutch. It goes down to the floor without engaging. Let it run then it engages. What could be the problem???

If u pick up the pedal then you have to pedal at all the cable is somehow coming off the quadrant completley I imagine, did u have to reattach it after that?
