Default 2001 gt foglight problem

So I'm having a problem with my fog lights. I've pulled the relay and I went to Ford to get a new one, and the problem is no one knows what kind of relay goes in there. Is it a multifunction relay? Or is it a fog light specific relay? Any one know the details of it? It can either be a 15 dollar relay, an 85 dollar relay or neither of the two and one I'll have to order for 120 bucks..... A little insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It is fog light specific, and is actually two relays in a single can--the main relay and the cut-out relay that disables the fog lamps with the headlights on high beam.

Here is the circuit diagram:

Make sure that 20A fuse in the battery junction box is not blown...

[edit]

I just looked in the 2001 Owner's Manual, that document shows the fog lamp cut-out relay (Relay 1) and the fog lamp main relay (Relay 5) as being separate relays. The shop manual shows them as being a single unit.

While we're on the subject of fog lights, why in the world do mine (2002 GT), keep blowing out? Everything electrical on the car is so stock it stinks but I have replaced both fog lights several times in the 6 years I have owned the car. What gives?

Vibration most likely, but check the connection and make sure it's clean and tight--a dab of dielectric grease in the connector won't hurt.

I once saw the entire 89x lamp series described as "cosmetic/toy driving/fog lamps", with the 16W 892 described as a "sick joke"...

I googled the 2001 foglight relay and received lots of results. Unfortunately many were no more helpful than your prior experience. However, O'Reilly advertises a couple specific Fog Light Relays. The fact that they have 5 contacts suggests they are multifunction relays. At $12.49 with a limited lifetime warranty, it might be worth trying one out to determine the kind you need and to give you something to use for now.

While you may ultimately want to spend more for higher quality, I hate to think you need to spend $120.

O'Reilley:
$12.49 Each
Online: Available
Store: Available
Limited Lifetime Warranty
Contacts: 5
Quantity Per Vehicle: 1
Part # : R3177

I hope this is useful.

I just pulled the fog lamp relay from my '03 GT, it is just a plain ol' automotive cube SPDT (5-pin) relay. It is very slightly smaller than most of the "universal" units, and has no mounting tab however there is plenty of room in the fuse box. The tab found on the universal relays would have to be removed. The R3177 suggested above will work fine with no modification.

The cut-off relay is a smaller less common model...

So I tried the 18 dollar one, no such luck. I also unintentionally pushed down on the fuse box so hard putting the relay in I started my car, in turn possibly blowing my starter.... In the end this problem is snow balling on me big time. Car won't start, fog lights don't work, worried now about wiring for lights and other fuses. Fml....
