Default 4.10 Gears: What do I need to know?

Hi guys,

So I've owned my 2004 Mustang GT for 2.5 years now and frankly I feel like I need to go faster. The only mod I have on it currently is a CAI so instead of trading my car in for another car (was thinking a 350z but that's ot of my price range) I was thinking of adding 4.10 gears to my car since I heard that it transforms the car into a whole different beast.

My question is what do I need for this to happen? I know I'll have to buy the gears from allamericanmuscle or something, but then what? Do I just take it to any Ford dealer and ask them to swap out the gears? Will I need to get a different tune to fix my speedometer, and if so, how much would that cost?

Basically I'm trying to figure out how much this whole modification will end up costing me.

there is a tutorial or 5 about this very thing. You'll need your speedometer re-calibrated and also youll want this install done by someone you trust, if done wrong you'll get Gear Whine. there is an install kit listed on AM i think you can get it with your gears.

Going to 4:10's is going to be like having a 4 speed. Forget about 1st gear, u will be using 2nd to get going.

Pick up a hand held tuner as you can use it to calibrate your speedo & add custom canned tunes or even dyno tunes. It will always be helpful.

The dealership is gonna charge more than most independent shops and thats no guarantee they wont screw em up. Find a good independent shop, they shouldnt charge much more than $250 labor + fluids. Fluids are about $85 for quart of lube & friction modifier so $350 -$400 for install.

I recommend the FRRP 3:73's for a manual 5 spd street car. Dont get the Motives as you will more likely to have to use shims. 3:73's are a good support mod for a SC & u still can use all 5 gears.

The best bang for your dollars is gonna be a super charger. Anything less u will strain to feel the difference, especially after a week or two.

FRPP gears ARE motive gears, motive makes the gears for ford racing. So the only difference between the two is the label on the box. I have 4.10s and supercharged and I still use first gear fine and its a street car.

OP,

The most important thing is making sure the work is done by a reliable shop. Other than that, you'll need the Speedo re-calibrated, which can be done by a tuner or a calibrator. Personally, I'd definitely go with a Bama custom tuner. You'll pick up more power and throttle response in the process!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

You will not be using 2nd gear to get going with 4.10's I have 4.30's and use 1st. And every gear install will require shims. OP almost everything in post #3 is wrong or mis guided opinon

Mine didnt require shims at all. Been 60K+ miles & no whine. I can get going with out any problem useing 2nd. You may use first but you dont need it.

Get some HP BraMas & you wosnt need such a low gear to get moving.

I'm ok in the HP dept. I can take off from 3rd if I wanted. When you use the word "need" it sounds like you have to if you would have said you can take off from 2nd it would be different. I dont see how you say your first gear is useless?
And it is impossible for your carrier to be in your rearend without some kind of shim's..........
