I have no clue wtf is going on... here are the clues, whoever can guess what it wrong with my car wins bragging rights:

It makes a "whirring sound"... you know, the "whoosh" sound... no clunking or grinding, but a whirring at anything above 10mph, it's not super loud, but still audible while driving with the windows up.

It sounds like it's coming from the front or middle of the car... so I'm thinking / hoping it's not the rear end?

It changes with vehical speed, but not rpm... tranny gear doesn't matter, and the noise changes pitch as I slow down.

tire pressure is fine. could it be something with the driveshaft?

My car only makes the "whirring" sound when in nuetral with the clutch engaged.When you push the clutch in the sound goes away.
In your case could it be the TOB?

Check you tailshaft housing, since this is the next likely candidate.... It's possible the brash bushings could be shot...Do you launch your car hard?? How's the tranny mount look?? The rubber should be firm, and have a small gap, or spacing in between it...

i was gonna say alternator bearings, but the fact that it doesn't change with engine rpm rules that out. maybe it could be something in the rear end, how many miles do you have?

i know a lady that had a grand vitara with a real bad whine coming from the middle of the car. after a new transmission the mech found out it was a broken tooth on the ring gear. hopefully this isn't the case

Got any floor jacks? Jack up the rear wheels off the ground, start 'er up & put it in gear. Does it still whirr with the rear wheels spinning off the ground?

63K miles. I looked at the tires, they seem ok. My initial suspicion was that something was stuck in the tire... but it doesn't appear to be anything, and it's not like the usual "click click click" you hear when you have a nail or screw in the tire when you go real slow. I haven't had a chance to get under the car yet, it started acting up this morning on my way to work, just trying to get some idears on what to check out when I get a chance to get under it. The car doesn't get launched too hard (at least I wouldn't classify it as "hard"), it's a daily driver.

does it become louder when you speed up? may possibly be the AC?

AC, as in air conditioning? [&:] I really really doubt it. for one, it wasn't on, and two, it has nothing to do with engine rpm, as far as I can tell.

and if you mean IAC, that should be ruled out because motor rpm doesn't affect it. I'm almost 100% positive it is something between the transmission and the tires, not anything in the engine bay.
