Knocking on start-up...opinions?

What weight (viscosity) oil you using? It could simply be the oil is thicker than what you used before so it takes a couple of seconds to get going or the old oil was so worn it was water at startup.

I have had some issues with a rough idle on startup. The revs build and drop. This never happends with enough regularity to cause me any concern and is only a few hundred rpm difference. The motor runs fine at all other times, except the lifter tick but that is another story. Also, you shouldn't be revving your motor at startup. I don't know what time frame you are talking about but if you jump in, fire it up and rev it up to 5 grand, that isn't good for your motor. You gotta let everything get up to temp before you start revving it.
As an aside, 3K oil changes are probably wasting your money, owners manual calls for changes at 5k.

As for the oil change, I'm an old-schooler trained by even crustier old-schoolers to change my oil every 3k...it's engrained into my soul, unfortunately.

That is fine for that motor so I can't say that's necessarily the reason.... although dropping to a 5W-30 would be worth a shot. Slightly lower viscosity when cold would circulate faster at startup. At temp you still have the same protection.
