Default Engine Removal and Install

Anyone have an estimate of what it would cost in labor to have a 4.6 removed and a new built 4.6 installed into a mustang? Thanks!

$60-$75 an our is usually basic shop rate, books probably call for 5 hours out and 5 in. so around 600-750 in labor. If they have to build the motor too keep forkin bennys over.

I don't have an engine hoist. My car is currently parked on my parents slanted driveway and the car is inoperable. For these reasons, I don't feel that I can do it myself. I have been quote for over a grand for this and was seeing if that seemed high or not.

Its probably going to be 1200+ in labor to pull it and have a new 4.6 installed if your not paying for parts.

Wow… Thats cheap. Around here its upwards of $100/hour.

To answer the OP’s question, prices vary greatly from state to state and even county to county. So call around your local shops and ask what their hourly rate is. Then ask them for an estimate of how many hours it will take to R&R a motor. They should have a “book” with the hourly rates of specific jobs that they can reference fairly quickly. That should give you a good ball park on how much it will cost. Of course the actual cost may be different, but you’ll at least know what your getting yourself into. Good luck…

btw, Harbor Freight has good hoists available for less then $150. you could also check around on Craigslist in your area and find a used one for sale.
