Could also be your compressor going bad as well too look into that as well.

Here's my update. I changed out the thermostat (although I think the old one was fine) and I also changed the coolant temp sensor.

I think the coolant temp sensor is part of the problem. Today I drove all day and everything seemed like it went great! Unfortunately just as I got home my AC started to go hot and temp started to slowly rise again.

So now I think it may be the compressor. How tough of a DIY is this? If anyone has any guides I'd greatly appreciate it once more.

Thanks

How about being clear about what's going on. Is the car overheating or your air conditioning failing?

What do you mean when you write the temp started to rise slowly?

Rise to what temperature?

Does the coolant temperature rise only with the A/C on?

You really need to apply the scientific method here.

I'm assuming you've already checked to see if you've thrown any codes? I would just concentrate on getting your fans working when they should be.

Thanks Sonic and Black LX.

Here's why I think my problem was really a 2 prong problem, but you guys are much better at this.

Originally car was overheating when AC would go out, and even if I turned AC off it would continue to overheat. At first, my fans would come on as soon as I turned my AC on, but once the AC started blowing hot I would check if the fans were spinning and they were not, which gives me the idea that by that time the car should have read the coolant temp as being too hot and made the fans spin, but nothing happened.

Once I replaced coolant temp, even if I didn't have AC on, my fans would spin once the car warmed up enough. I drove car all day like that after changing cooling fan and ran AC and it was great, until almost the end of the day. By the end of the day, my AC started getting warm again, and the temp gage started rising again. I only let it rise about 3/4s of the way, and then turned off the AC. The fans were spinning and quickly got the engine temp down again, where as before the fans would stay off and engine temp would continue to rise.

This is why I am wondering if I solved part of the issue with the coolant temp sensor, but maybe I am missing something else? The AC works fine and blows cold most of the day, but then suddenly warm air? Then the next day cold again.

What troubleshooting steps would you guys recommend. I can definitely do a write up and post pics of anything I do to help any future readers.

there is a low pressure switch, with no refrigerant the compressor clutch will never engage
