Default Driver side stuck caliper

I've been noticing a metal/grinding noise the past few days. I finally got a chance to check it out today, and my driver side front wheel had SO much brake dust and metal shaving on it, and the rest had the normal dust on them. The front of the rotor facing the rim felt pretty good, smooth. The back side however felt terrible, and there were dust and metal shavings caked everywhere on the back side of the rotor. So I'm guessing that back side of the caliper is stuck?

Any ideas? Maybe, a line collapse? and will pushing the pistons back in help this? or will it just stick again?

The caliper is designed so that it slides on 2 pins as the pads wear. These pins should have a special grease on them to keep them free. If the rubber boots that keep dirt and dust out and grease in they will dry up , rust and stick

oh okay, thanks for the reply. that makes sense. I would much rather try that than a caliper right now. what kind of special grease, and where could I get some without having to order it?

Youll need a new rotor as well if that one is all grooved in the back , its likely warped also. Id replace both front rotors and pads and lube both sides .

you shouldn't have to take the pins out, just pull the caliper off with the 2 main bolts then you will see 2 smaller bolts that hold the caliper bracket on take these 2 smaller bolts out and the bracket should slide off the pins.

As dawson1112 mentioned, the caliper slides on those pins. If the pins are rusted, pitted or damaged you should replace them. You can get a replacement Slide/Guide pin kit from most auto parts stores for around $5 and new rubber boots for around the same price. If the inside of the bore where the slide pins goes is rusted, pitted or damaged then you might as well replace the calipers. They are supposed to be smooth.

Also make sure to use the brake caliper grease that dawson1112 provided a link to. Regular grease won’t be able to withstand the heat generated during braking, will just liquify and ooze out of where it needs to be. Regular grease also has the drawback of being corrosive to rubber (like the rubber boots on the caliper). Brake caliper grease doesn’t have these problems.

Good luck...

Chances are gonna take alot of heat and patience to remove those frozen slide pins out of the caliper bracket
