The seal is pressed into the back of the block, the slinger is pressed in to the rear engine plate so if you only replaced the piece in the rear engine plate then you're still using the old rear main seal.

Slinger should just be a thin flat metal disc, it's purpose is to deflect most of the oil away from the actual seal. That's the basic design of it.

I only replaced a 4.6L seal one time about 10 years ago on a Crown Vic; at 230K miles it also needed a crank sleeve which fixed the leak. By the way, no seal will stop leaking after a while (unless maybe a rope type seal). If it leaks after installation it will only get worst. Did you replace the gasket for the seal retainer?

Should be by definition but not on the mod motors. That's why I said "slinger" is a poor description and actually in some catalog listings it's called a baffle but either way it is actually a seal.

Well like I said it has been about a year since I installed the seal and I know that I did replace the seal because it looked the same as the old one. I did only order one part, so I starting to think that I installed the new seal, but did not install a new slinger. After all this work I am not so happy right now! If the slinger is not installed what is the worst case, the oil will just slightly drip out as it is, or will it start to poor out when the RPM's are up and the pressure is high?

Kind of hard to say what will happen but the leak isn't going to get any better so it's probably best to just buckle down and fix it before it does get worse.

Trust me, I know how frustrating it is to have to do all that work again.
