Hello, i have just bought a 1999 Mustang GT with 138K i love this car, its everything ive ever wanted. But i do have a question. So when i bought it, she had 1/2 a tank. I drove her till the low fuel light came on. When that happened i noticed the needle was below E. I took her to a gas station and filled her up with about 15 gallons of 91. I started her up and noticed the gauge only showed 3/4. It wont go past 3/4. Ive been doing some reading and saw people talking about a stepper motor or possibly a sending unit. What do you guys think? please help.

Sounds like a sending unit to me. I had a car like that before. It will just get worst the longer its in there. Replace it now if you can.

The way the sending unit works is by passing a small amount of current through a wiper as it passes over some conductors. The resistance varies as a bobber moves it up and down with the fuel.

Over time these can build up some crud increasing the resistance in the circuit causing a false reading like what you have. It's an easy fix you just have to clean the contacts off. However, it is inside the fuel tank so if you can live with it I would unless you have to replace the fuel pump.
