Default Mustang not staying on unless my foot is on the gas.

Hello, I have had a problem where when trying to start my car (1996 Mustang GT) unless my foot is on the gas it stalles. And while driving it I have to keep my foot on the gas or it stalls so when im trying to brake I have to put it in neutral and apply the brakes while keeping my foot on the gas. What could be causing this? It used to only do it once in a great while but now everytime I go to drive it, I have to do this.

make sure the iac is functioning correctly. if not, try cleaning it or placing it.

Exactly what School boy said. If you have to replace it, it's like $40. And best to buy it new.

Another issue could be is to clean out your throttle body. My 03 does this occasionally. Try cleaning out the throttle body/intake with cleaner and that should fix it.

Make sure it's Throttle Body Cleaner, and 'NOT' Carb Cleaner! There is a difference. Carb Cleaner will remove the coating.

And if you do replace it make sure you go motorcraft. My aftermarket iac would cause hanging RPM

I just bought my 03 gt, iac replaced with an off-brand model, but it has an adjustment with a small cover over it.

If you look at the end of your iac valve, there is a round piece on the end. That piece is covering an adjustment screw. Start by setting your idle screw at 1/2 turn just after it makes contact with the throttle. Then turn the iac adjustment screw (clockwise if your idle is hanging) to your preference above where the ac/fan/power steering won't stall it. That's your lowest recommended idle.

I had that happen in my 2000 gt. Ford replacement back then cost me around $100 I think
