Default rear end noise

i have a 99 gt. 5 speed. whenever im driving 10mph+ i have a grinding sound. no matter if im in neutral or any gear. it gets louder as the speed increases. after driving you can smell gear oil from the rear end also. i checked my brakes and they are fine. last weekend i pulled the diff cover and re filled with 75-130 and friction modifier, thinking it was maybe low. but that didnt help. what do you think it is? its getting very annoying now

When u pulled off your diff cover did u notice any metal shavings or chunks of metal come out? If it was low it my have ruined one or more of the bearings.

no. no chunks. the plug had the ordinary metal on it. nothing alarming. one of the techs from my job said axle bearings?

I would also suggest the axle (wheel ) bearings.

deffinently some metal on metal contact! I would guess a bearing. Take the diff back off and see if there is any play, also while on jack stands lift up on the tires and check for play

with the rear end up. the wheel will not move up and down. if i grab the spokes from the top and bottom the wheel will move in and out. and if i rotate the tires back and fourth. theres a little bit of play with a clunk type sound

grumbling/grinding sounds are more than likely bearings, drive it for a bit then check each side of the axle housing for a temperature difference the hot side will be the problem.

doesnt have to be very technical, just put your hand on the axle in the 6 spots where there are bearings be careful could be pretty hot if you have a worn bearing

Check the pinion yoke where it connect to the drive shaft in the rear. If you can move that yoke around then that bearing is toast.
