That doesn't sound good. I would guess a rod bearing or wrist pin.

Rod knocking. Sorry. Pull the fuel injector power one at a time with it running, when it gets quieter, that will confirm the knock and tell you what cylinder it is.

Well I was really hoping it wasn't a rod =( how expensive would it be to rubuild myself or what's my best options in this situation?

A less expensive alternative would be to buy a reman engine. They can be had for $2 - $3K. You can also go the junkyard route but you never know what you're really getting.

ok so is "Pulling the fuel injector power one at a time with its running, when it gets quieter, that will confirm the knock and tell you what cylinder it is" a positive way to check and make sure its a rod without screwing anything up completely or is there a better way? I figured if it was knocking that it would do it at an ideal as well?

Yes, it's a common method of checking for a rod knock. When you disable the cylinder, it has less load and less knock.

I always go with the junkyard run if I don't plan on building it. I usually go with a crown victoria or towncar engine, they can be had for around $500.

Well honestly all I wanted to do was throw a cam in it. I have people saying it sounds like cam phaser or flywheel/flexplate or starter loose cause it does grind sometimes when I start it. But like I said , I know very little.

You don't have cam phasers in a 96 GT. If you hear rattle on start up, the gaskets on your cam chain tensioners are likely blown and will need to be replaced. Is this like a starter grinding or is it a rattle immediately after it starts?
