Default Drag.

Hi all,
I have an 04' Gt that gives me a weird feeling in the brakes and or clutch. When I'm driving it almost feels as though the brakes are engaged. Not fully, just slightly. Enough that it will not roll back on a slight grade in the roadway when in neutral.

When driving at high speeds and going lets say from 3rd to 4th gear is also when I feel like I'm getting a sort of drag. Kind of feels like I'm pulling or towing a trailer or something along those lines.

I took it to the dealer which did absolutely nothing. They took it apart and broke it down and couldn't find a thing wrong. I have after market rotors, but again they said its not a brake issue. The only other thing I could think it could be is the clutch. The previous owner installed some sort of (which the dealer described as a) "heavy duty clutch".

Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

Thanks

Drive it for 20 miles or so and feel the wheels. If one is hotter than the rest, you found your problem.

Good advice, just be careful when touching them. I have seen wheels get hot enough to melt plastic center caps. I wouldn't worry about the clutch, it wouldn't cause what you're describing.

It could be a lot of things, sticking slide pin on the caliper would be on my list.

Also double check the brake hoses, if you had the calipers off when you replaced the brakes make sure you didnt twist one of the hoses before reinstalling caliper...that can cause a drag

Instead of driving it, just jack it up and spin the wheels. They should all spin freely, and the same. Could be a caliper dragging or a bearing going out.

Took it to two mechanics and they can't find anything wrong. I know I am not imagining this. And it does not happen when the car is cold. It happens after driving it for a while.

This may sound absolutely strange however after my incident I feel I should post. After my rear dif blew up that's exactly what it felt like (I had a noise though). I doubt that is your issue but if they can't find anything else, could something back there be causing it? I am very new to mustangs but it's something else to look at.

When you feel it doing this, have you stopped and got out and felt which wheel/wheels are hot? This does sound like a brake problem.

When the car is cold, it'll roll freely right? But after it gets warmed up, say after a :20 min. drive, if you stop on a slight delay incline, the car will not roll?

If that's the case, I guarantee one of your wheels will be hotter than the others, and you've found your dragging brake.

Had something similar happen on my F150. In normal driving there was never a problem. If I used the brakes hard, they would heart up and the pistons in the left rear would not release. This caused more heart and the piston would stick even more. If I let the truck sit for hours and completely cool, the brakes were fine again until the next time I stressed them. Stupid phenolic pistons. I replaced the caliper and all is well.
