Default Long tube headers in CA?

Im of the understanding that long tubes wont pass smog in CA, is this correct? Someone also told me that going to a bigger throttle body has the same issue; can someone shed some light?

Long tube headers are not smog legal in CA. Any performance part sold for use on a street driven vehicle must have a CARB EO number to pass emissions testing.

You understand right. LT'S in Cali are a no go. Not to sure about the TB but unless heavily modded its a waste of money.

Is it just a visual inspection problem or do they actually change the emissions? And on that note, I am also considering a cam swap but have heard that can cause issues too. If it idles normally (i.e. no evidence of a cam) will it still pass or does changing lift/duration/etc make emissions not pass either?

Both. First they won't pass visual inspection as they don't have a CARB EO number. Secondly, by definition long tune header will change the catalytic converter location, something that is not allowed in CA. On pollution controlled vehicles the cats are located as close to the exhaust manifolds as possible to help the catalyst do it's job. That is why the only headers for pollution controlled vehicles available in CA are short tube headers.

The short answer to your cam question is no, only products with a CARB certification will pass smog in CA.
