Default steering rack play

i replaced the steering rack on 03 gt. the old one was broken due to a wreck. I ordered one from LKQ and installed it, spr-zk. the old one I took off appeared to be a remanufactured one. it was not the zk, ( cant remember what it was) not ZM either. any way I finally got to drive it , and it has some play in the steering. upon inspection, where the rack and pinion meets the steering shaft is where the play is. its almost like the diameter of the shaft is too small. and yes the pinch bolt is tight. or maybe when they put the remanufactured R & P in, could they of possibly put in a different steering shaft with a larger diameter where the pinch bolt is .. I'm lost. did I forget to do something??? the steering rack I got had 50k miles on it. please help

I wonder if the original steering shafts wear? causing it to have some slop.. I just looked at MM and they have a pretty good looking steering shaft. Is this a common replacement, has anyone done this job?

I don't hear much about the shaft wearing in that area, mostly in the rag joint.
As for the mm shaft, great piece and is on my to do list.

I know you say the bolt is right, but when I did my headers I put it in backwards and had play. Switched bolt around so it actually pinched and it took the play out. I would triple check that bolt

You are right! I remember when I removed it , I had to turn the wheel a bit to remove the bolt. When I installed it I didn't have to. I thought that's weird. So I called MM today and he said haha your bolt is in backwards. Lol. Wow this car drives great. Thanks bro.
