Default Must shift to 2nd to get into drive

I have a 96 Mustang GT automatic 4.6l, periodically when I shift from PARK to Drive, nothing happens. I need to shift to 2nd to engage and then back to D (Drive) and everything works fine. It shift fine through all gears after that shift to 2nd and back to drive. No slipping or failure to up or down shift after that. It's just that sometimes it needs to go from park to 2nd to get the car in gear.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom Emanski

it seems that your shift linkage is sloppy and/or worn out. inspect it and replace anything that is suspect

Yeah something has moved out of alignment. And it's not uncommon for the cables to stretch some. There should be a lock nut and adjuster at one end of the cable if the cable looks good/undamaged I would just adjust it till it works correctly.
