Default 4.6 Timing Chain

2001 4.6 Windsor 2v engine.

Checking the valve lash adjusters because the engine is tapping/ticking. Found the Timing chain loose. Didn't expect that.

Is the timing chain tensioner loose if the engine isn't running? Or should the timing chain be tight?

Not 100% sure, but I believe that the tensioner is activated by oil pressure.
Check for worn or damaged chain guides while you're there.
How many miles?

if you're that deep in replacing tensioners and guides would be a good idea as well

pop a cam cap off and make sure it isnt scored.

tensioners run off oil pressure so if its been sitting for a while it wont be taught
