Default Performance Mods... 99 GT

I have a 99 GT and i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions that are fairly cheap but add power. I mostly want power added to my higher gears such as 2nd and 3rd. 1st gear has a lof of power because i raced my friends 02 M3 and we were head to head till i switched to 2nd gear and he beat me . Anyways, if there are any mods that anyone here knows about that arent very costly but do add power, please give me a list of them so that i can start working on this puppy.

How about starting w/answering the following questions for us to help you.

1) How much are you willing to spend [read: what is CHEAP?] to have a fast car? Cheap is not always the best solution as opposed to quality.

2) What do you want specifically? Performance, sound, little of both? more ft-lbs, or more horsepower, & where at in your rev range?

3) Do you realize that if you want to win against an M3 that you are going to need to push more than 285rwhp? That means you'll need just about all of the bolt-ons, or a power adder like a blower or N2O? That car puts about 280rwhp to the crowd in a supercharged V-6 w/great traction [albeit a little too much oversteer if I remember correctly], so...you'll also need better tires, plus good shifting skills.

One thing to keep in mind...Mustang GT's are good BASES for modifications...not out the box rippers.

Sorry, i'm new to the forum thing so i might not specify exactly what needs to be specified for a correct answer.

I am looking to spend on each mod maybe 200 or less and whatever the instalation fee is.

so far the parts that i heard are good to get and are in my price range that make the most difference are(and correct me if im wrong please):::

underdrive pulleys, coldair intake, headers, flowmaster mufflers, 3:73 or 4:10 rear end gears(which ones would be better for everyday driving?) and a short shift kit (looking into Steeda Tri-Ax)

As for sound, i would like my car to sound a little bit louder and more agressive than the stock GT when the engine is cold(im not sure if anyone knows what i mean exactly) so i think the flowmasters will take care of that. Im mainly looking for performance other than that.

as for more HP or more Torque. if you could just give me different parts and tell me what they increase, i could prob figure it out from there.

Sorry about the wierd questions and all that but i just like to take the opinions of people like you guys that have experience and know what they are talking about. Please just give me any advice or any suggestions that you want. thanks a lot for baringwith me,i really appreciate it

If you want hp, stay away from Flowmaster.

It all depends who much money you wanna spend. You should start out with a set of gears. Then do the exhaust, and upgrade your intake. Thats pritty much the basics you can start out with.

Well, here's what you can start w/if you want to stay AROUND $200 for parts.

A 4.10 gear will DEFINITELY be more beneficial to you than a 3.73 if you want to beat in M3, & due to different tire sizes, a modular motor, & different gear ratios a 4.10 is very much likea 3.73 in a 5.0. If you are concerned about dropping out of your powerband...3.73's WILL do that in 5th, so stick to 4.10's. If you want to puss out, & concern yourself w/a 200rpm difference &little less gas mileage them the 3.73's. They can be had from anywhere around $129-$189 plus shipping.

A PRO 5.0 shifter is mandatory $189

March Performance, or Steeda underdrive pulleys $159-$179

NGK iridium plugs. These can be expensive, but if you know someone you might get a hook up. I believe something like $16.53 apiece, but I only paid $6, so it's who ya know.

For $200 you are not going to find a DECENT cat-back. You can get a pair of FM's for a little less than that, but Flowmasters will not give you the performance gains you seem to be after. They no doubt sound good, but what good will that do you sounding really mean as that M3 walks you horribly? I went with Magnaflow, & Bassani, but I have heard that Dynomax also make a decent straight through system. And there are even a few curious guys looking into SLP's, but I haven't any info on them. Most cat-backs are between $300-$400, but they can go HIGHER.

Don't waste you money on a throttle body unless you are going to do a mass air meter, & upper intake plenum change. Stay away from a CAI, because a mass air is more beneficial. My FRPP t/b was $189, but they can be had for cheaper if that is your goal. My C&L kit was $359 for the M.A.M. system & $189 for the plenum. The C&L kit comes w/a K&N so if you plan gettig the kit, don't by the filter now, or u'll just be wasting ur money.

An aluminum drive shaft w/shed about 6lbs, & drop .6 in a 1/4 by less rotational mass. $189

Everything else I've done cost more than $200 per mod, so I hope this helps you...the best thing you can do now is get a gear if you want to run w/that M3. You'll need a speedcal since you plan on staying away from a chip [it's expensive]. Best of luck.

awesome post Gixxer.

I agree with pretty much everything he had to say.

If you do gears, go with 4.10's and don't waste your time on 3.73's.
