yeah a few things
learn to shift faster
buy a tri-axle shifter
replace your quadrant
install a firewall adjuster
if these do not help than replace your clutch fork

Yea that sounds like your quardent. Get rid of the plastic and get a alum. one. And while your doing that you might what to replace the cable, and go with the fire wall adjustable. It's not hard to change, And it's pritty cheap.

Absolutely right. Replacing all the other stuff won't solve your problem. The synchros are a weak point in the T45, and belive me brother, stop trying to power shift right now. Everytime you grind gears you run the risk of doing some nasty damage to the internals. I just had to have my tranny rebuilt because I did the exact same thing you are doing, and the last time I tried to power shift like that, I busted the 1-2 shift gate right in half, which is a quarter-inch thick piece of metal, and the tranny was stuck in 1st gear because the shfiter would not engage the fork at all because it was completely disconnected. I agree that you should buy an aftermarket shifter though. It will help. Other than that, don't try to shift faster than you are able. Transmission rebuilds aren't cheap.

if he has a stretch cable will do this to a point...it is obvious that a rebuild is on the horizon. the t-5 is terrible about this...I would start saving for a tremec this is what I use it nice trans....if you decide to rebuild it pull it out and reinstall yourself as this will save you a 100 or 200

The '97 comes with a T45. To change the synchros you have to have the transmission rebuilt. If you have any experience with rebuilding transmissions, it's possible to do it yourself, if you have the right tools, otherwise it's definitely best left to a transmission shop. If you're going to have it torn apart though, you may as well go the whole 9 and have it completely rebuilt, bearings, synchros and all. Another option would be to purchase a Tremec TKO transmission, which is a lot stronger than a T45 and costs about the same as a complete rebuild. You can pick up a new TKO for between $1100 and $1500 depending on where you shop. As far as the synchros are concerned, it's going to grind the 1-2 shift if you shift too fast and there's nothing you can do about it, and it's only going to get worse with time. I suggest you shift real easy into 2nd gear to avoid any further damage until you are ready and willing to have it rebuilt or replaced, and unfortunately, it's inevitable.
