Default Another Tires/Rims inquery

Looking for info/advice on rims and tires for my 02 GT. I think I've narrowed down the type rim I would like, but I'm still unclear about how wide a tire I can go with and what rim is needed to do it right.

1) What is the widest tire that will go on the back without spacer/shims(wrong name) and without sticking out from the fender? Is it about a 275 or 285?

2) What width rim is proper for this width tire? 9" or so?

3)What is widest tire that can go in front without sticking out from the fender? Around 255? Proper rim width?

4) Why don't I see much talk about going to larger rims and lower profile(same overall diameter) tires? Are they too suseptable to pot hole damage or something? Anyone have experience with a 275/35 18" setup?

I'm thinking of going with a 18 x 9 with 275/35's on the rear and 18 x ? with 255/35's on the front(same overall diameter as stock). I've read much opinion about 275's going on the stock rims just fine, but I am definatly getting new rims, so I would like to match up the rims with the tires. Any thoughts on this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MAx 275 widht w/o sticking out of fender, I put 275, 35 x 18all around, I have 18 x 9 rims, no problems with sticking out or suspension, I evenlower it 1-1/2 inches with new springs, the tires fit just perfectly. It feels great and looks good too.275 on stock rims is unheard of.Yes, be careful with the potholes though. No problem for me where I live.

Pics of my cars below to use as an example.

Hey thanks NO2Junkie,

This makes me feel much better about where I'm going with purchases. Your car looks great! Do you have any taken from directly in front and in back - to see the diasmeter look of the tires?
