I'm not 100%. But it think the 97 has a 180 degree. People usually drop it to a 160 degree. </P>

i dont think going to 180 will create much of a problem but if yougo directly to a 160 you will.....the reason is that the stock fans are set to come on at aroun 205-225 somewhere in that area, so if you put is a 160 the fans may never come on....you may have this same problem with a 180...if you get a custom chip, they can program your fans to come on at the right temp for say a 180 or 160 t-stat <edited><editID>Black Horse</editID><editDate>37992.8712731482</editDate></edited>

A thermostat does one thing and one thing only it opens the flow of coolant at a certain set temp.Just because you have a 160 stat doesnt mean it wont get hot enough for the fans to turn on.It just means that you start circulating fluid at 160.

your motor isless efficient at lower temps, however its capable of producing more power, and also more emmissions. manufactuers want to run at higher temps becomes the motor runs with higher efficiency (less pollution) and has a shorter life time - great for repeat business.</P>

people change them out mainly to grab an extra horse or two at the expense of some fuel economy. it won't mess up your computer.</P>

if your car is running hot, its probably time for a flush and refill and check to make sure the thermostat isn't stuck.</P>

the only thing the thermostat does is change the time that the coolant goes through the radiator.. the fan is still going to turn on at like... 205 or something around that.</P>
