Default Problems with 5 speed

Im new to the forum, this is my first post. My reason for registering, other than wanting to be able to talk to other mustang owners, is that im currently having a problem with my 5 speed transmission.

Third (ive heard this is a problem gear?) is not wanting to engage unless I perfectly match my RPM to my speed. Otherwise when i let out he clutch it just grinds badly. Its been doing this for some time to a much lesser degree (aka only when shifting at very high RPM very hard) but now does it all of the time.

I am thinking I have a sync. out. A guy at work who owns a 03 and a 84 5.0 said they are very easy to switch, but im not even sure this is the problem.

The question is, has anyone else had this problem? The second question is, is it worth it to bother pulling out the trannie and reparing the syncs when I can get a 3550 or t56 for under 2 grand and have a transmission that will more capable of handling my projected upgrades? Or will this trannie, with new syncs, be able to handle a upcoming cam switch and possible supercharger from vortech install within a year.

Also, has anyone ever replaced the snycs? Is it a total pain, or easy as this guys says?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

No it's not easy, especially if you don't have the tools or experience working with transmissions. Granted manuals are easier to work on than automatics, but you have to know what you're doing before you open one up because you will end up with a pile of parts on your bench and have no idea how to put it back together.

As for your transmission, even with new synchros, the T45 is only rated to handle about 325 HP. You don't have to pay $2,000 for a new transmission. If you plan on adding a lot of power, it would be wise to invest in a Tremec TKO 5-speed, because they can handle a lot more abuse than the stocker. You can pick up a brand new TKO for anywhere between $1,000 - $1,500 depending on where you look.

Thanks for the info. What about the 3550? I have heard good things. What are the differences between the TKO and the t45 gear ratio wise.

Do you have a site that sells them? I would like to take a look

ATM even with my few mods, 1st is very short. Cant get all the way into it without losing traction. I dont think I want any shorter of a first gear.

With the 3.73s my current ratios are just about perfect, or so it seems. Shifting at redline puts me right back in the best part of the powerband etc etc.

the T45 tranny would be whats on a 99 GT right... if so.... do you mean that the tranny can only handle 325 HP TO THE WHEELS or 325 hp that the engine is producing

Well, consider the process. Drivetrain loss occurs through the transmission and rear end. Since the horsepower the engine produces is transferred directly to the transmission, the approximate 325 HP limit would be based on HP at the crank. It's possible to get by with that much power or more on a stock transmission provided most of the time you drive the car conservatively, but if you drive with a lead foot everywhere or race a lot, you're going to have problems.
