Default Best bang for the buck upgrade

I realize I'm opening a real big bag of worms here, but I need some realeducatin'.

I'm trying to figure out where to best put what money I can scrape together toincrease the performance of my '96 GT ragtop. I know enough to be real dangerous, and have done a lot of work on cars, but never to increase the performance.

I'm not sure where to start. I read about these little vortex spacers that precede your plenum that promise gains. I read about the cold air intakes.I read about replacing the MAF with a high $ version to increase flow. I read about replacing intake manifolds, plenums, throttle bodies, gears..etc. I've read here about underdrive pulleys but they only seem to be for '99+ cars. I KNOW PI heads are a must, but not ready to go there yet.

Assume I'm stupid, and you'll be real close to being right!!

TIA!!

NOs has a tendency to shorten the life expectancy of your engine though doesn't it? I've always heard baaaad things about NOS...except at the dentists office.

I dont know where you heard that but whoever said it knows s**t about Nitrous (by the way is not NOS)..As long as your engine is tune for it you will have no problems, all kits on the market are safe......try it..

You can definitely get underdrive pulleys for your year. It's not just 99+.

I got a 96 GT also. Most people will say go gears for your first mod either 3.73 or 4.10. I just purchased my first mod, I got the American Thunder flowmaster exhaust off jegs.com should be here on Friday so I'll let u know how I like that. I've heard CAI doesnt do much. Nitrous can be dangerous if you dont know what you are doing. If you are gonna run anything over 100 shot get forged pistons and keep your compression down.

Don't waste your money on that Vortex or Tornado thing.

CAI's won't do much, the MAF is the biggest restriction in your intake.

Nitrous is safe, especially safe with a wet 100 shot. Tune it properly and it'll never blow.

4.10 gears, Magnaflow X-pipe & mufflers, headers (anything but flowtech is fine). A timing adjuster, MAF, throttle body, intake...PI HEADS, like you said...are a must.

Timing adjuster? Electronic timing changed via? Is that like the "power chips" or something? What about those things?

Thanks for the heads up about the Vortex I wondered. The CAI's really don' t do much huh? Thanks. If the CAI doesn't help, how come the larger MAF will. We're talking a couple hundred bucks...is it really worth that?

How do you tune for nitrous?

Similar shopping list I've seen elsewhere, but which first? Which gives you the best gain? How does the timing adjust help? Are you advancing or retarding the timing?
