Default cam quest

just wondering if anyone has done a cam swap on late model GT (2000 or later). If so did you do the job yourself or let a pro doit? If you did it yourself did you wing it or did you have instructions available? Where'd you get the cam and how much in a ballpark figure? The reason I'm asking all this is because my bro-in-law got really descriptive install job for LS1 cam swap off a web site. I mean it's real detailed with photos and all. Anyway he's gonna get the kit and we're gonna make the swap in his garage. We're not mechanics or anything, although we're both really inclined that way. I've decided if it goes well and can be done in 8 hrs or less I'll be doin the same to my '01 GT,but I've got to have some guidelines for the task. Anyone know of some place I might get step-by-step install for an '01 GT? I'm lookin to go mild, like 212/218ish. I ain't makin a living off race winnings; I just like the thought of 20-30 rwhp for less than 500 bucks. The job itself sounds like fun too. If you know otherwise from experience please let me know, and tell me what was so difficult. If anybody's interested that web address is www.LS1howto.com/index.php?article=23. IT'S LONG... <edited><editID>silstang</editID><editDate>38031.5399421296</editDate></edited>

I've pondered changing the cams numerous times. Just a shot in the dark, but I would bet a cam swap on the 4.6 would be no sweat. Looking at an LS1, it's probably a pain in the ****. It's not like it used to be when it would take 20 mins to have the cam out of your 327 Chevy small block. </P>

If someone does the 4.6 cam swap, please let me know...I'm very interested in how it goes. I'm always looking for projects like that.</P>

I may adjust my cams later down the road...gotta let me know how it goes and if it's a big difference or not! 20-30 hp for under $500 sounds like a good deal! Do you have toget your car re-tuned?

I may be jumping the gun if I assume the job can be done for less than $500. I was going by a price my bro-in-law was able to get his LS1 kit for. After shopping around for a mild cam for my '01 I'm beginning to think vfast has a legit. opinion; everyone out there seems to have higher duration than I'm lookin for. Most distributors seem to make 289's and bigger their main target. What a pity...Those that do have a cam for 4.6's are much more expensive (as vfast has stated) because I'd need to order a custom grind lobe. Thanks vstang. Sorry it may be a while longer till I can offer feedback on that install, guys. But I ain't givin up!<IMG src=smileys/smiley7.gif border="0">

A little price shopping I did about a month ago, all from comp cams website :
</P>

Comp cams x2 camshafts: 715.00 </P>

SOHC valve springs: 251.68</P>

Reprogram Diablo chip ; 50.00</P>

Total: 1016.68</P>

This was for their "xtreme energy" camshafts, and I put the valve springs on their because they recommend them with this heavyer cam. <FONT size=2></P></FONT>
