Well your gas mileage already sucks anyway, but yeah with 4:10 you will sac. gas mileage and top-speed, but your accel. will be sick and youll lke ur 1/4 mile times......if you have a 5-spd go with 3:73.....if u have an auto go with 4:10
lies all lies

the biggest difference I noticed is when your cruising highway speeds, your car/exhaust is much louder due to the higher rpms. Take off time (if you bite) is a little quicker.... me personally, I would worry more about horsepower than gears. 4.10's arent going to all of a sudden turn your car into this monster, trust me. people here will want you to think that. More HP's is what your really after... gears will just make you a little quicker. Now, if you put in gears, new exhaust, etc, etc, etc, then you will notice a big difference. as for 3.73's vs 4.10's no driveability differences, just a tad bit quicker off the line if you bite with the 4.10s and higher rpms on the highway- which will affect your gas mileage compared to stock. If you baby it, then in city driving might only drop 1-3 mpg- some reported they got better gas mileage in the city.... i didnt, but some did apparently. Good luck
I didn't see anyone claim in this thread that 4.10's would turn your car into a monster, and you are correct that they do not provide any increase in HP. They do however give you back some of the low end TQ you lose when going with improved exhaust components, and allow your vehicle to reach it's peak HP power band more quickly.
Let's face it, there is a lot of mis-informationabout what a rear gear is and the ratios...A rear gear converts the revolutions of the driveshaft into revolutions of the rear wheel/tire. In other words, a 4.10:1 rear gear turns 4.1 turns of the driveshaft into one turn of the rear tire. The larger the first number is, the lower the gear ratio is, and vice versa.
A low gear ratio is for acceleration, while a high gear ratio is for a top speed. Drag racer's usually want to have as low of a gear as posible, since they are only worried about getting to the finish line that is 1320 feet away, so a 4.10:1 is usually ideal for them. If you are driving your bone stock 1987 5.0 5 speed 200 miles on the freeway, the stock 2.73:1 rear gear ratio is better suited for you since your speed will be higher at the same RPM than a car with 4.10:1's.
No matter what, there are some constant things when it comes to cars, and they are all tied into math. Let us take that bone stock 1987 5.0 5 speed mentioned before and look at what it will do in 4th gear with a set of 225/45R17 tires. Now, we are also going to set another guideline before chaging the rear gear ratios, this car is going to be running at a constant 3000 RPMs. I chose 4th gear since it is a 1:1 gear, meaning that each time the flywheel of the engine turns, the driveshaft will turn once also.
The new 225/45R17-sized tire has a calculated diameter of 24.97", a circumference of 78.44" and will roll 835 times each mile, no mater what gear you are in, what your gear ratio is, or your RPM that the engine turns.
now, lets mix it up a little, and see what RPM that you are running with the same car, tranny gear and tire size with different gear ratios at 65mph....
Let me throw this out there. Since I dont have the luxury of storing my stang over the winter (although it does stay garaged all week), It does make the occasional trips into the snow in the winter months here in IL. Is it a real pain in the ass to drive with 3.73 or 4.10's??? Basically hows driveability all around compare not just for ideal situations like nice sunny warm days. I'm sure I will get something back like once you learn how to drive with them you wont notice but I would like to hear opinions from those who have to drive in crappy weather with these gears. Thanks
who drives a mustang andn cares about gas miliage? lol, 4.10's and loose what, like 1 mpg?? well worth it in my eyes
well, I didnt care about gas at all... but all of sudden freakin' gas is over 3.00/gallon- thats when I start to care. If the stang was the only car i drove, it wouldnt be so bad, but between a truck, zx2, stang, gas is killing my wallet!!
