Default To buy a blown 4v?

another tech is dropping a motor in a customers marauder. he didnt diagnose it, and i didnt hear it run but he said theres a bad bottom end knock, the customer didnt wanna pay tear down instead just bought a ($3500+) longblock.
Should i buy the longblock for whatever the core deposit is? really if i have the block, heads and crank machined, new pistons and bearings on the bottom n valves on top i should be in good shape.
What do you guys think? i didnt get a chance to ask what core deposit was, someone shoot me a ballpark figure if ya could. thanks!
