Exclamation Getting my automatic transmission fluid changed to Royal Purple. (Need expert advice)

So the thread title really says it all, but I really wanted to swap to Royal Purple's ATF fluid, but my mechanic only says i need to replace half of it. He's not going to drain it all; just what comes from the pan, from my understanding. I mean if I'm going to pay him to replace it shouldn't i go the whole 9 yards? Won't it benefit me A-LOT more to change it "all" to Royal Purple? He did say in tranny fluid it doesn't matter and that mixing it is "OK". Wanted to get a second opinion before i go through with it Tuesday. Thanks

Mixing it is NOT OK. You need to change it all if you're going to change types of fluid. And the only way to do that is either take the transmission apart completely and re-fill with Royal Purple, or hook it up to a flush machine and have the Royal Purple going in as the old comes out.

Your mechanic is an idiot.

This.

The mechanic has a point when he says he can only do half. Dropping the pan will lose most fluid... but there is still a lot stuck in the lines, cooler, valve body, and torque converter. Only way to get it in right is to find a place that does trans flushes with a machine. And have it flushed in.

Guys I appreciate the input. I'm going to have him flush all the old out with the new as well as replace the tranny filter. Hopefully Royal Purple live up to it's expectations for me. Thanks Again! You all rock

Most automatic trannies are 12-14 quarts of fluid. Dropping the pan will drain about 6-8, depending on the tranny and the size of the pan.

If you were to actually take an automatic tranny apart you'd see where all the little places are that fluid can hide that can't be simply drained from the pan. WhiteFox mentioned most of them, but even then, there's parts inside the actual workings of the tranny. There's a lof of one war seals, gear sets, clutch packs, all kinds of little fluid passages. It's crazy. I absolutely hate taking apart automatic trannies. I'd rather do 100 manuals than 1 auto. Luckily there's a guy at work that's pretty good at taking apart the autos, so I don't usually have to do it, lol.

So yeah, make sure you buy enough tranny oil. Lots of people don't realize how much fluid autos actually take. I'm not sure on the exact amount the 4r70w takes, but it's probably 12-14.
