Angry These Damn 4.10's !

OKK, Well I got the 4.10's installed, got it back it whined, I bought it back once again they set the backlash to .004 still way too tight actually made it a lot worse. What do i tell the guy to set it to now? I'm going to be calling him today. I know that once gears are in and they are whining and you drive it around its going to whine now regardless the setting but it won't be so bad.

The original setting the guy had set it too was .008 I am going to tell him to set it to .012 Please let me know if i am wrong or if this is the safest route i should go down. Thanks guys you have helped me through this you all rock.

I'd like to know as well. I got mine in and they whine in 5th gear only at about 55-70 mph. I'm just going to live with what i have though. Good luck with it!

Man, at this rate i would ask for a refund and go buy new gears and have a real shop do the install. This shop shouldnt need YOU to do HIS job by telling him what to set the backlash to. I had an exhaust shop try to screw me before, i got the BBB involved and they straightened their act right up. I would take it else where,...just my opinion.

EDIT: did this fool at the shop think to check the pinion depth?

Yea what shim did they use on the pinion? Did they re-use the factory one? Did they even put one back on?

That definately sounds like a possibility if different backlash settings aren't working. It sounds like the bearing preload with the crush sleeve could have been done carelessly.
