Default Modding my '01 GT to 400hp, what do i do?

Hey everyone, I'm very much new and fairly mechanically retarded lol, but I do love cars and am eager to learn.
I would like to make my '01 Mustang (everything is stock) louder and faster, and it seams like most stock parts can handle up to ~430hp or so I've seen in a couple posts. I'm not an a fixed budget but I'm not rich either. I don't plan on rebuilding everything on this car because I plan on simply buying another car in the future, however I want this one to be as much fun as I can make it while it's mine. That being said, I'm wondering what I should do to get to about 400hp (no more) and make the car sound mean? Any info would be great since I'm a science nerd and not an auto nerd, unfortunately lol.

Also, adding a K&N cold air intake, and swapping for a flowmaster exhaust, would this be advised? what would be the best to get if so, and how much would that set me back?

everyone and their mother has flowmasters, but they sound good none-the-less... IMO I'd go on youtube or to your local car meets and see what other stangs are running til you find a sound you like...

also if you have 1000 dollars, then get intake, exhaust, and a short throw if it is a manual... then with the leftover couple 100 look into gears (altho I was never a big fan because I still plan on going F/I)

i'm sure others will chime in with more ideas.

Don't waste your money on a Cold Air, save the money, they are more for cosmetic purposes than anything, and don't add much power if any.

Best way to get to a 400hp goal would be a few bolt ons (LT's, T/B/Plenum, O/R pipe), add a set of Cams, And then the cheapest way to get you the rest of the way to your goal would to either go Nitrous or Super charger, that should get you to your goal

Also look into getting Gears (3.73 or 4.10) and a Short Throw shifter and Subframe connectors.

As far as exhaust go flows are fine, thats what i run, flows w/ a Off road H-pipe and a set of longtube headers, thats what I'm running and it sounds pretty mean, but its really all about preference, check out some videos on youtube on different exhaust.

You can piece a S/C together for 1500, theres a thread about it on this site, Cams price depends on who you go with, check out http://www.americanmuscle.com/ for basic bolt on's, Long tubes, and Mid pipe.

go with full exhaust( cat back, mid-pipe, long tubes.) gears ( 3.73 or 4.10's) and then some sort of F/I will get you 400hp. oh and a good tune.

If you want it to sound as mean as possible do a full exhaust with cams. On top of that the cheapest way to get 400+ hp is nitrous.

If you want your car to sound mean, go faster and be more fun to drive. Get a new exhaust set up (header, mid pipe & catback), 4.10s and a short throw shifter. Everything except the gears will be easy to install. If your stilling wanting more and not having enough fun with that set up you can always add a supercharger.

The Flow cat back is a good choice, they sound good. Exhaust, gears and a short throw will cost you less than $1500.

Nitrous or Supercharger is the only way your getting 400 hp.

But to me Longtube headers + X pipe + bassani catback = sex.

oh and get some 4.10 gears and a Vortech V3 supercharger.

hey guys thx for the info, i went to youtube and i like this sound the best:

the description says the guy used "JBA Long Tube Headers, Catco Catalytic Converters, Borla Agressive Catback" so i'm guessing the catco catalytic converters would be the mid-pipe, would you say this is a good set-up? if it is this is what I think I'll try to add:

4.10 gears (~$159.99)
Short throw shifter (~$180.00)

JBA long-tube header (~$1,165)
Catco catalytic converter (~511.30)
Borla catback (~$600)

considering:
accufab 70mm throttle body & plenum (wondering what the difference between the Accufab F7046K and the Accufab F7046 other than $200)
some kind of supercharger (but that'll come later)

So the stuff I want to get (gears, shifter and exhaust system) totals ~$2620 that I could find, this seems like more than you guys were talking about. So is there a place that I could look that sells items for less? Also does what I want to add make sense and do you think it would be a good idea?

My last question is what does it mean when someone wants to go F/I?
Sorry for the long post and the noobish questions but all you guys input is greatly appreciated, thanks for everything!
