putting HIDs in a car that did not come from the factory that way is against the law, not OEM HIDs. every single retrofit kit that you see breaks DOT and federal laws. i'm not trying to tell you what to do, but at least when you make a decision, it will be an informed one.

to answer your original question, it probably would not help you in your situation. the HID bulb that you will put in there is not designed for the housing that it is in, so you will get an unpredictable beam pattern. that combined with your tinted headlights will only make your light output worse. you will probably wind up with light output at a distance (which is where you want it on an unlit highway) WORSE than what you have now

hell, i dont even know what lights are in the scion tc that i mentioned, but its as bright as day and blinding as hell to be in front of, from the factory...

Well either way, I have smoked lenses, and to combat the limited light output, I put a badass quad fog light setup on there...bright as hell. Gives me all the light i need on the back roads.

These are the headlights i have. They are DOT approved however, so not sure if yours are or not, but I use the silverstart ULTRAs and they are brighter than the factory set up was. I have considered HID though.

but can you see better at a distance, where you actually need it? the thing with HID light optics is that after you "align" the bulb, it will produce a lot of light right in the ground in front of you, but actually puts less light at a distance than hallogens do. it's not just an opinion, these are facts. its simple physics. but as i said, i'm not telling anyone what to do, i am simply letting you know what the facts are. an HID bulb cannot and will never produce the same beam pattern that a hallogen bulb does in the same housing, which is why any and all HID retro kits are illegal. i reccomend reading the link that i posted above. it is filled with very valuable information to illustrate what i am having a hard time explaining.

technically, he's right. If you really want to get technical, putting anything that isnt a factory part on your is illegal. That includes everything from emission controls, right down to wheels and tires...... if you want to get technical of course. trust me, my dad is a cop, my bro is a cop, and 2 of my best friends dads are cops.... i asked 'em all and gotten this same answer

The reason cops dont get you for having 20 inch chrome rims is because people would be up in arms about being told what they can and cant do with a car they bought with their own money... not to mention the immediate halt of the manufacturing of aftermarket parts, hence billions of dollars of revenue.

I find this very hard to believe. My shop won't put in off road h-pipes and similar mods because they are illegal. No where on the rims I purchased does it say for off-road use only.

Wow this thread is full of fail.

First off, HID's are illegal in a halogen housing. Like said before, the light output is sort of unpredictable, and the cut off sucks. However, HID's in projector housings IS NOT ILLEGAL. That is how all of these new cars get away with it, they have projector lenses that provide a nice cut off to the light and keep the "blinding light" focused in certain spots.

I also have tinted headlights with HID's and the light output is 100% better than halogen, I don't care what this IRSmart guy says. The distance is not less than it was before but it's not a whole lot better either.

That being said, if they made a good looking projector for our cars I would buy them in a heartbeat. The only way to get the full potential from HID's is with a projector lens.

OP, if you want a nice looking projector you need to do a retrofit. PM Aeron, he took the projector lens out of some G35 headlights and retrofitted them into the stock headlight and it looks amazing.

That sounds like some California bullsh!t right there and IF all that is true then why is it that almost every time I go to a car show I see a tricked out cop car? Hell I was watching Powerblock the other day and this Sheriff department took a Charger to them and had it: tuned, exhaust, intake and so on. So are they just breaking the law on national television or are they exempt from the law because they are cops?

technically HID's are illegal if they do not come stock... putting them in anything besides a projector housing makes them even more illegal!!! but ask me if i give 2 f*cks... what about all the people with trucks and SUV's who blind me with regular lights?? idc. i need to see the road..

smoked clear corners + HID's = best 2 things on my car... get them. thank us later

i like www.ddmtuning.com
