Default probebly a dumb question about t-56

Ok so im looking at getting one very excited, but first off its coming out of a 98 cobra? i didnt think they came with one? And if they dont then that means it was a swap, but does that mean i need all the same stuff as i would getting a t-56 from a 03-04 cobra? like will the driveshaft work? comes with clutch and flywheel but i dont think that will bolt up to my GT. any help from you smarty pants would be nice.

the 96-01 cobras came with a t45 trans so it must be swaped in, you will need a transmission cross member for the t56 (i think), i shorter drive shaft, and some kind of calibration for the speedo. also the flywheel will work if you have an 8 bolt crankshaft but wont if you have a 6 bolt your model year could have either one depending on if its a windsor or a romeo, windsors have 8 bolt cranks

I did a T-3650~T-56 swap earlier this year and was an easy install. Lots of things to address, but went quite smoothly. You should need a new DS, but may not need the X-member as mentioned above. There were some secondary holes in mounting brackets, but cannot be certain if stock would have worked. I would recommend you pick up a Cobra one to be sure as they are only $50.00 or so.

What are your reasons for the T-56? I went with one due to failing T-3650 bearings and the mega-gap between 4th~5th gears. There are several different models so be sure to address the gear ratios as some are very similar to yours and some differ quite a bit.

to be honest, i dont need one, i just like six speeds alot...had one in my maxima, always wanted one, need a new tranny figured nows a good time for what i want. There are advantages tho. Such as a 6th gear to drop the rpm back down to normal level once ive put 3.90s in it, and of course close ratio 1-4 will help alot with keeping me ontop of the torque when flying down the drag strip or around corners. there isnt really anything i can do if its mechanical speedo tho huh? at that point its probebly not worth the money?

Well i dont know of any mustangs in the 90's with this tranny in it so he must have done something to it to convert it to mechanical speedo. Now you just have to figure out what he did and reverse it. Plus a lot of the sites on the web that offer tranny swaps and stuff say they can be used in electronic or mechanical speedo cars. So you just gotta find out what to do to make the swap. Call around and find out. Cus im pretty sure that the 96-98 gt's use the same tranny as the 99-01's and the 99-01's have electronic speedo's and the 96-98s are mechanical. So there has to be something to be able to use it with electronic speedo cars.

But this transmission is coming out of a 98 cobra...how would buying the 03 cobra speedo solve his problem of the transmission having mechanical speedo stuff to making it electronic???

This may not be the case unless you get a viper spec t-56, the 6th gear in a normal t-56 is like .62 i think...and our t-45 is like .67, where as the viper is .50, just something you might want to check first.

Yea, the regular t56 has the same 6th gear as our transmissions have 5th. So it wont drop the rpms. Now the magnum t56 has normal 1-4th and 5th and 6th are higher than normal...i think. That would be the only 6 speed that i would put in my car.
