Default LOW COMPRESSION 2002 Mustang 4.6 ENG -WHAT NOW?

Hi All! I am new here. My 2002 GT engine light came on PO306. 1st thought it was fuel injector, then coil. None of the above. Did a compression test on all cylinders. # 6 came up bad with 95. The rest were right at 150 or better. Did the oil test on #6 and compression jumped to 125.

So, it looks like it's a ring/piston problem. I was hoping with the low compression it might be a exhaust valve. Someone said it could be a head gasket as well. Is that true???

Anyway, do you have to take out the engine to install the ring on that cylinder if that's what it is? Any way possible to raise the piston without taking the engine out?

Car only has 67K miles on it. Am I looking at replacing the whole engine with a used one because of one stupid piston? What the labor charge for yanking one out, and replacing it with a decent used engine? I know the used engine comes with everything basically assembled, like manifold valve convers etc. So it should be somewhat cheaper to assemble than a rebuilt long block.

Sorry for all the questions, but I really not sure which way to turn here!!

Thanks

To do it with the engine in the car you will obviously need to pull the driver's side head (the brake booster needs to come out IIRC), then use an engine support beam (click here) to hold the engine up while you drop/remove the front crossmember so that you can get the oil pan off. You can then take the rod and piston out.

In my opinion if it was a blown gasket you would have water in the cylinder and it would be getting hot.

I have never seen anyone put just one piston in with the engine still in the car but the way cliffyk is explains it, makes it sound like it can be done.

I was not advocating it, but it could be done...

If youre going to do just one piston, i think its a waste. Just pull them all and do some upgrading in there if you can. Or maybe not upgrade but just replace while youre in there so you know what youre working with.

i know u said oil brought the compression up, but i would seriously look at having a bad valve. ive seen several 4.6's in trucks and expeditions with a single cylinder misfire that turned out to be burnt valve problems. worth checking into before u call i a bad engine.
