Looking to buy a 96 GT
Hello everyone. I'm looking to purchase a 96-98 GT. I'm a former GM guy so I don't know much about fords. There is a 96 GT Convertible(stick), but it has 160K on the dash. They want $3800 for it.
A couple questions I have are:
Is that a fair price?
How many milescan these modulars handle?? I don't want to buy it and immediately have to put a new motor in it.
I know its NPI and I know some of you will suggest a cobra, but won't a cobra increase the insurance cost?
I have no plans to race so I'm ot worried about getting stomped by v6's & 4 bangers.

well depending on how well the engine was taken care of you can def get some more miles out of that engine. If you are buying a NPI 96-98, then you are smart in saying you are not worried about getting stomped by v6's and 4 bangers :-p
as far as insurance, yes a cobra will cost you more, and it will also cost considerably more then $3800 to buy as well.

I've had 3 96 GT's. One burnt oil and had like 80 sum on it and the rest were underpowered in my opinion until I got a PI swap which was to me, a brand new 2002 engine. With 160k, I'd be weary. I'm not saying the motor's can't handle high mileage, I'm not suggesting that at all, but what do most people buy mustangs for anyway? To beat on them =)
I'd pass it up and find another, seriously. Just me though.

When I say that I did the PI swap, instead of doing the whole 300$ used setup from the bone yard, I opted for a brand new long block for a 2002 GT. So yeah, I did the swap but the short block too. The car felt new to me on a transmission with 60k sum and matching suspension.

i've seen several non pi 4.6's have issues with the valve guides and valve stem seal burning oil, especially at higher mileages. but other than that, i say u should be good to at least 200k if u keep a check on the oil and dont mind a little smoke.

I burn no oil at all when I had my 96 GT and it had over 198k on it! Ran like a champ and even made lots of trips to the track with no issues other than a heater core! Now the tranny on the other hand, those tend to be messed up with shift forks and all being bad.
