Default RPM tach not reading right

What would cause an RPM tach to be off? I mean your sitting at a light and it is reading 2200rpm or 0rpm yet you have no power loss or performance difference and it started after you installed new headers. There was no tuning to be done as they were shorty headers. What would cause the tach to read incorrectly?

Would my problem be a bad gauge or a loose wire?

pull the battery wires off and just let it sit for a while and see if the computer resetting itself would help.
