ive had the 40 series on every mustang ive owned. if your still running your factory h-pipe it will give you a good street sound, if it loud old school muscle you want your going to need an off road h-pipe to go along with those mufflers

if you go to flowmasters website they show a graph of the sound you get from each muffler:

http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/index.php?cat=1

on the left end you see the Super 44, Super 40 and 40 Delta are all the same according to them. i wouldnt imagine the original 40's being much different.

so im guessing they will sound relatively the same

When i was shopping for mufflers, i talked to a guy at Flowmaster, and he basically said the 44's were a tad deeper and more refined sounding compared to the 40's. He also said the 40's would drone more. Hope this helps a little.

The 44s sound amazing with an O/R H pipe, and by themselves as well

i have the 40's on my car, and man they sound nice. they drone out like crazy in 3-4th gear (cant really hear them in 5th) if your just driving down the road. if you can bear how loud they drone, then get them.

i've had both the 40 series and super 40 series on my car. 40 series will give you the sound you're looking for, and i think they're the loudest mufflers you can get for mustangs, but yes, they do drone at 2k rpms. my current super 40's don't drone as much and are just as loud (i can't tell a difference). i went with their stainless steel catback. i would have gotten their 40 series in a SS catback, but they don't make the 40 in a SS version
