buy a built shortblock or build you own???
I was planning to buy a shorblock this summer, BUT I was on coral doing some reading and this member told another member that the stock cast iron block is plenty strong and has 700hp on his stock block. I know he has the necessary forged rotating assem ect... what are your opinions on that? My goal is a 500 hp DD later on. P1sc, longtubes, and edlebrock intake going on this weekend if everything goes as planned
ps. car is an 02 gt with boltons

My first question to you is have you ever built a motor before or a 4.6 for that matter? I was just there and went ahead buying MMR short block for piece of mine. That is what they do build motors, leave this to the professionals.
Yes, stock block is strong and will handle 500 rwhp + but you will need forged internals and they will need to be balanced as well. By the time you buy forged rotating assembly, machine work for your existing block, and your time you won't be that much ahead in terms of price savings assuming you go with manley rotating assembly.
If you have the money now go to Modular Mustang Racing they are having a crazy short block sale. Another thing, if you plan on going with blower cams go ahead and buy new heads with the cams already in them. Otherwise, after price of cams, springs, retainers, and install cost to existing heads will be like 800 cams and springs etc and 500-600 for install. You can buy heads and cams for like 1800-1900 bucks.... I wish I did this for my build but my buddy did my head work for free and it was a **** load of hours assembling.

thank you^ I appreciate the educated response. well I wouldnt be doing the build my buddy would be. Yeah I have been keeping an eye on their sale but I dnt think im going to wanna spend all my tax return at once. I was thinking I would be ready by the summer. I have been looking at the 5.0 STROKER Street Mod 850... ive heard alot of bad **** about their oil pumps. I see that a few members have their motors

I really dont consider building a motor all that hard. If you can follow instructions you can do it fairly easy given you have a torque wrench and an engine stand/hoist.
If you want the experience, get your hands dirty and build it.

That depends on what you buy.. If you buy H beams and good pistons with a good crank you could push it until the block cracked.
