Cold air intake loud @ idle
okay so this one really has me "stumped" the cold air intake has never had a noticeable noise untill the other day I was going through the gears a little rough and when i came to the traffic light you could hear the sound of air being sucked through the cai even since then it has stayed that way. It is paticulary loud at idle and when your not giving it gas. I disassembled it and cleaned with cleaner. the tube, filter and sensors. when I place my hand over the end of the tube the loud sucking noise goes away!! what went wrong and how do i fix this. I dont think the car feels as Powerful as befor this noise occured.
long tube headers, x pipe, flowmaster, trickflow plenum,
i would say car needs plugs wires etc. but would a good tune up even effect the cai being loud??
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Get a spray can of starting fluid and spray the spots where you have vacuum lines and see if it raises the idle just by spraying those certain spots(due to starting fluid being extremely flammable). Thats what i'd try first. Then if you dont get anything, then come back. Could be a hose that dry-rotted or fell off or something. The vacuum leak can make the car run lean and not perform as well as it could, which could be the reason for decreased performance. Check it out and see whats up.

the idle dosent seem like it has changed alot. it still is right below 1000 rpm's I think i noticed when you rev the car up or accelerate it takes the rpm's longer untill they drop even between shifts, or i may just be really paironoid. thanks for the info guys i will try the starting fluid, hope it's a simple hose and a simple fix!!..

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Your idle shouldnt ever be up that high unless that is what its set in your tune. That alone tells me that you have a vacuum leak. Idle should be around 550-600rpm's not 1000rpm's. Definitely get that starter fluid and try all the vacuum lines.

I found sum throttle body cleaner that i used on the maf sensor to try and clean it out. anyways i used it (its flammable) and sparyed all around the intake, lower and upper plenum and every hose i could possible see. and nothing happend. (stupid me ive done this befor in the past on my 2000 gt car ended up having a leak and bad iac) but this one my 97 the idle dosent rev up and down it stays right below 1000 rpm just the cold air intake sounds like it could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch :-/
the cai never sounded like that untill I was out crusin last weekend on some country roads then I came to the traffic light in town and you could hear the cai sucking in air. when i shut the car off you can hear it take like one last "gulp" idk thats the only way i know how to explain it.
keep the info coming i apperciate it.
