A shop would be able to tell if it has gears.
First and foremost: TUNER! Buy a tuner and get your car firmed up.
Afterwards I'd suggest looiking into adding a catted or Off-Road Hpipe (deep sound) or Xpipe (Raspy). In addtion to a catback exhaust such as Borla, Steeda, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, SSS. Youtube different set-ups to get a feel for the type of sound your looking for.
Then i'd get suspension work done. Lower that 4X4 looking stang with a kit.
Use the search function to find out how to do things as well as googling it.

You just asked us what you should do next with mod's & where to find info about it. Its really hard for people answer such an open ended question, "Best way to fix up a mustang w/o wasting gas". IF your worried about losing mpg then i think you need to find yourself a different car, mustangs arent a prius LMAFO.
Like what are your intension/ plans with your car?.... taking it to the stip, auto-X, a good DD? Theres a lot one can do. Are you planning on keeping it N/A or going with a S/C? Explain.... & use the search function.

Start with some lowering springs and a nice set of wheels and tires and then go from there. Some shocks and struts such as the Bilstein HD's would be a nice addition as well to help out with a better ride and better handling after the lowering springs. Short throw shifter will help with the fun factor. Depending on the color, tinted head lights and tail lights will add to the look as well as window tint. Then if you want to clean up the engine bay, you can start adding brushed aluminum coolant and power steering fluid tanks and valve covers. And also, something that will minimally help with gas and show is a nice detailing job using all the auto detailing supplies you can get your hands on. It will make the surface smoother and glossier and will help wind drag ever so slightly. Does that answer your question?

Also you can visit my sticky on how to get better cobra brakes for your car...
