Default Gear swap: what am I getting into?

I have decided I am going to go to 4.10s in my 2003 GT auto. I want to stay away from the engine for now (may or may not do a swap later on), and this seems like one of the best performance increases per buck I can get. Any objections to that?

So, what kind of hell am I getting into? My business partner and I have plenty of tools to do any mechanical work, but what about the other odds and ends that come with modding a newer car? Any programming to be done?

Thanks in advance!

4.10s FTMFW. Speedo will be off, will need either a speedo calibrater or a tuner to recalibrate it.

For your auto I would strongly consider 4.30s.. that ish would own.

As far as a gear swap is concerned, as long as you have the correct measurement tools to dial in the necessary locations you should be good.

Youll need some better tires, a decent suspension and a tune to fix the speedo(you dont need a tune but ur gonna want one later on..a speedcal is wasted money).

Do you have a press? Slide hammer? Bearing race drivers? Powerful impact gun? e8 inverted torx bit? Dial indicator? Air hammer with miscellaneous chisels?

I could go on, but if you say no to any of the above, dont attempt it

I don't have to do anything with the transmission in terms of shift points, etc.?

4.10 is the lowest I will go, so as to not harm my fuel economy. I have pretty much figured out that I can get about the same or better with 4.10s, provided I keep my foot out of it and don't drive like a goon (might be easier said than done!).

Thanks for all the help so far!

Is this true?

...Also if you have an automatic transmission this will cause your shift points to be incorrect and could cause some serious problems that could lead to transmission damage...
