Freon was Dupont's trade name for dichlorodifluoromethane, and was banned/discontinued in 1996 for use in automotive air conditioning systems--since then cars have used R-134a (tetrafluoroethane) refrigerant, which although not benign has much less negative effect on the atmosphere.
